ISL 2024 started with a bang! But who are the heavy hitters to watch out for? Build a team with us, starting with the goalkeepers.   

Let’s Football….if this doesn’t hit in the feel then I don’t know what will. Remember 2014? India was vibin’ and kickin’ it with a league of our own. And now almost a decade later we are witnessing stars, MVPs, legends, and emerging hidden cards in the making.

Ten years on, India has come a long way in discovering the rarest talent with the Indian Super League. 

From watching Chennaiyin FC vs. Mumbai City FC live and estimating who would be the star players to witnessing the game-changers and the greatness that has evolved in these years, it is simply phenomenal.

So here’s a fun game….let’s build our own dream team. This is a series of phenomenal players in all categories, and we will discuss each position in detail. Choose your MVPs and make a team that remains undefeated. Let’s see which players are popular and which are underrated.

Starting off with the men with the best shields. Goalkeepers have our heartstrings in their hands. The moment we are at the edge of our seats, it’s these players who save the day. We considered various parameters, including clean sheets, passes, saves, goals conceded, and more, along with their consistency in the last decade. 

From popular opinions to pundits’ lists, here is the player pool of consistent goalkeepers (in no particular order):

1.Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Bengaluru FC)

71 saves in just one season! Is there anything more to say? The current captain of India National Football Team has dominated the clean sheets count, consistently defending in almost all ISL seasons. Fan-favourite on Reddit worshipped on Twitter, and is a veteran on every list ever– Sandhu is the main character. 

What’s more…he holds the most clean sheets (45) for India. How can you not bet on the ace?

2.Prabhsukhan Gill (East Bengal FC)

With an overall 18 clean sheets, this young blood is a force to reckon with. The Save-master has his defence game on point. If you want a reliable shield, then Gill is the way to go. With only 77 goals conceded in 62 appearances, Gill is paving his own way to the top. 

Nevertheless, standing on the same pedestal as other seasoned players and still validating his skills is not an easy feat for anyone. Yet, this young goalie is subverting expectations with 18 clean sheets already in his credit. 

3.Phurba Lachenpa (Mumbai City FC)

If precision is your decision, then Lachenpa is your man. From saving to passing, his accuracy is a marvel only he has mastered. He is the wall for Mumbai City FC with a high probability of saves and high stakes for the team. He is a true nightmare for the opposition’s striker with over 71% save percentage. 

4.Vishal Kaith  (Mohun Bagan Super Giant)

Two gallons of consistency mixed with a sea of stability and you will get Kaith. The Kaith-runner is giving the opposition a run for their money with unparalleled defence, reigning with 1689 successful passes. The seasoned player should be your hidden card if you want to sweat down the other team. 

5.Amrinder Singh (Odisha FC)

Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Singh has come a long way, debuting at 18 for Pune at Durand Cup. Looking at his journey, I say it with all my chest, he will be bookmarked in Indian football history. Clocking in at 14723 minutes, that’s a number I would bet for the on-field experience.

6.Apoula Edel

The Armenian legend is the UNO reverse card. You need him if you want a good plot twist in the game. The man becomes one with the net and doesn’t allow the ball to get in the territory. His stats are evidence that he is definitely a G.O.A.T-keeper!

7.Subrata Paul

He is the hero of your heroes. Pal has been monumental in inspiring the young lot. Even with just 10 appearances, his stats scream iconic with 2 saves/game and passes like never seen before. 

8.TP Rehenesh

He is the original King of Diamonds– Can you guess why? Coz you can never lose when you have the OG “save king” by your side.  With a 70% save ratio and 3 saves/game, you can learn a thing or two about stoicism and handling pressure. 

9.Jan Šeda

0 Yellow cards, 0 red cards, 81% saves, and 191 successful passes in just 14 appearances– if that’s not a Czech-mate then what is? The Czech player’s recoveries are a sight to behold. Definitely a legend for a reason.
